How to reduce a photo's size in KB
- Choose the photo. Phone photos, screenshots, scans and iPhone HEIC photos all work.
- Pick your exam from the list, or type the form's own numbers: Minimum KB, Maximum KB, and the width and height if given.
- When both width and height are set, a box appears on the photo. Drag it over your face and use the zoom slider so the head fills about the dashed oval.
- Tap Make my file. Check the preview and the size line, then download.
Pixels, centimetres and KB are three different things
Forms mix three measures. Pixels (200 × 230) are the dots in the picture. Centimetres (3.5 × 4.5 cm) are the printed size, which becomes pixels only when you pick a DPI: 3.5 cm at 200 DPI is 276 pixels. KB is the file size on disk, which depends on the pixels and on the JPEG quality. The tool takes all three: switch the unit to cm or mm and set the DPI, and it works out the pixels. The guide on pixels, cm and DPI has a full conversion table.
Why your file passes the check
- The maximum is kept below both 1,000-byte and 1,024-byte readings of a KB.
- If a minimum is set and the clean file is smaller, harmless comment bytes are added so the file reaches it; the picture is unchanged.
- The DPI you set is written into the JPEG header, for the few portals that read it.
- The photo is turned upright using the phone's rotation tag, so it never arrives sideways.
Worked example
An IBPS-style form asks for 200 × 230 pixels, 20 to 50 KB. A 3.8 MB, 3000 × 4000 phone photo is cropped to the 200:230 shape around the face, scaled to 200 × 230, and saved at about 92% JPEG quality, giving roughly 24 to 32 KB, inside the range on the first try.
Questions people ask
- How do I reduce a photo to 20 KB?
- Choose the photo, set Maximum KB to 20, and tap Make my file. Or use the ready page: Compress image to 20 KB.
- Is this photo resizer free?
- Yes, every tool on this site is free with no sign-up and no watermark.
- Do you keep my photo?
- No. The photo never leaves your device; it is processed by your browser and forgotten when you close the page.
- Why does the portal still say invalid size?
- Check that the format is JPG and that the pixel size matches if one is stated. Our guide on image upload errors lists the usual causes.
- Can I make a photo bigger in KB?
- Yes. Set a Minimum KB; if the photo is smaller, the file is padded up to it without changing the picture.
