Which layout should I practise?
Typing tests in government recruitment usually allow Hindi on either Remington Gail, the old typewriter layout that matches the Kruti Dev font, or Inscript, the Government of India standard layout built into Windows. Check your notice and practise only that one; switching later costs weeks. Pick it with the Keyboard layout switch above the test; this browser remembers it. Our guide Inscript or Remington? compares them.
Learn the keys first
New to a layout? Start with the key lessons at the top of the Passage list. Lesson 1 uses only the home row, the keys under your fingers at rest, and each lesson adds more: the top row, the bottom row, the letter rows with Shift, then the number row. A lesson is 50 common Hindi words, in a new order each time, that need only the keys learned so far. The keyboard under the box shows what each key types and lights the next key to press, with Shift when it is needed. In Remington, the ि sign is typed before its letter, as on a typewriter; the keyboard shows that too. Turn the keyboard off with Show keyboard when you want to type as you will in the exam.
SSC CHSL 2026 typing test
The LDC/JSA typing test is 10 minutes. Hindi needs 30 words per minute (about 9,000 key depressions an hour) and English 35 (about 10,500), judged on how accurately you type a given passage, and Hindi must be typed in the Mangal font. Mangal is a Unicode font, and this test types Unicode Hindi too. The notice does not name a keyboard layout, so practise the one you will use. The test only has to be passed; it adds no marks. How the score is worked out
Gross speed counts every five keystrokes as one word. Net speed takes away mistakes. Following the way many recruitment typing tests evaluate, a wrong, missing or extra word counts as a full mistake, and a spacing, capital letter or punctuation slip as a half mistake. The guide on WPM and KDPH shows the arithmetic.
Questions people ask

- Yes. Choose the layout your notice names and set the time it gives. Speeds and mistake rules differ from one exam to another, so check the notice for yours.
