Where 10 KB is asked for
Ten kilobytes is a tight limit, usually seen for signatures and thumb impressions on older portals. At this size a colour photo of 200 × 230 pixels still looks acceptable, but anything bigger than about 300 pixels wide starts to blur. For a signature, turn on Black and white and Whiten the paper: a clean signature on white needs only 3 to 6 KB, so it fits easily.
How to compress a photo to 10 KB
- Tap Choose a photo and pick it from your gallery or files.
- If the form gives a pixel size (for example 200 × 230), type it in Width and Height; otherwise leave them empty.
- Keep Maximum KB at 10. If the form also gives a minimum, type it in Minimum KB.
- Tap Make my file and download the JPG.
How the tool reaches the size
JPEG files get smaller in two ways: fewer pixels, or lower quality. Lower quality first blurs fine detail and then shows blocky patches, so the tool tries quality first only down to about 55%, and if the file is still above 10 KB it reduces the pixel size step by step. When you fix the width and height, only the quality can change, and the tool searches for the highest quality that stays under 10 KB.
The limit is counted safely: "10 KB" can mean 10,000 bytes or 10,240 bytes depending on the website, so the file is made smaller than both. See KB, MB and bytes for why this matters.
Worked example
A 4.2 MB phone photo of 3024 × 4032 pixels, with width 200 and height 230 typed in and maximum 10 KB, is cropped to the 200:230 shape, scaled down, and saved at the highest JPEG quality that fits. For a plain light background the result is usually about 8 to 9.5 KB at 45 to 65% quality.
Questions people ask
- Will compressing to 10 KB reduce the quality?
- Only as much as needed. The tool searches for the highest quality that still fits under 10 KB, and reduces the pixel size only when quality alone is not enough.
- Is my photo uploaded to your server?
- No. The photo is opened and saved by your own browser. You can switch off mobile data after the page loads and the tool still works.
- My form says between 5 and 10 KB. What do I do?
- Type the smaller number in Minimum KB. If the clean file comes out smaller, the tool adds harmless padding so it passes the minimum check without changing the picture.
- Can I compress a PNG or an iPhone HEIC photo?
- Yes. PNG, WEBP, JPG and iPhone HEIC photos all work, in any browser (outside Safari, a HEIC photo takes a few seconds to open). The result is saved as JPG unless you choose another format.
