Where 100 KB is asked for
A 100 KB limit is common for single-page documents: caste, income and domicile certificates, mark sheets and ID proofs. A one-page scan at 100 to 120 DPI fits comfortably; a three-page document needs about 30 KB a page, which still reads well in black and white.
How to compress a PDF to 100 KB
- Tap Choose a PDF.
- Keep Maximum KB at 100.
- For printed text on white paper, tick Black and white: the file gets smaller and text stays sharper.
- Tap Make my file, then Open to check that every page reads clearly before you upload.
What happens to your PDF
Scanned PDFs are big because every page is a photo. The tool draws each page again at a resolution (DPI) and JPEG quality chosen so the whole file fits under 100 KB, starting at 150 DPI and stepping down only as far as needed. The new pages are pictures, so text in a typed PDF can no longer be selected or searched; it reads the same. If your PDF is already under 100 KB, the tool says so and you can upload the original.
Worked example
A 4-page scanned certificate of 3.1 MB with a 100 KB limit gives each page about 25 KB. That fits at about 90 to 110 DPI in black and white, which is still clear for printed text.
Questions people ask
- Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
- No. pdf.js and pdf-lib, two open-source libraries, run inside your browser. The file never leaves your phone or computer.
- Why can I not select text in the compressed PDF?
- To reach small sizes every page is saved as a picture. Forms only need the pages to be readable, which they are.
- My PDF has a password. Can I compress it?
- Remove the password first (open it, print to PDF, or use the issuer's option), then compress it here.
- How many pages can I compress?
- Up to 50 pages. For more than that, split the file first.
