How to resize an image
- Choose the image.
- Pick a unit: px, cm, mm or inch. For cm, mm and inch, set the DPI.
- Type the width and height. With only one, the other follows the photo's shape; with both, keep Fit on Crop to choose the part to keep, or pick Whole picture, white edges to keep all of it.
- Set the maximum KB (it starts at 500) and make the file.
Units and DPI
Pixels = centimetres ÷ 2.54 × DPI. So 5 cm at 300 DPI is 591 pixels, and 2 inches at 200 DPI is 400 pixels. The tool converts as you type and writes the DPI into the file.
Worked example
A 1920 × 1080 screenshot resized to a width of 800 pixels keeps its 16:9 shape at 800 × 450 and comes out at around 60 to 120 KB.
Questions people ask
- How do I resize without cropping?
- Type only the width or only the height; the other side follows the photo's shape.
- How many pixels is 1 cm?
- At 200 DPI, 1 cm is about 79 pixels; at 300 DPI, about 118; at 96 DPI, about 38.
- Does resizing reduce quality?
- Making an image smaller keeps it sharp; making it larger than the original cannot add detail.
