How to get a form-ready photo
- Take the photo against a plain white or light wall, in daylight, looking straight at the camera. The guide on photo rules for forms has a checklist.
- Choose it here and pick your exam (or type the size).
- Move the box so your face sits inside the dashed oval, with a little space above the head.
- If the wall behind you is not plain, choose White under Background.
- If the notice asks for your name and the date the photo was taken, tick Add name and date.
- Tap Make my file and download.
Common photo sizes
| Size given in the notice | Pixels at 200 DPI | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 × 4.5 cm | 276 × 354 | 413 × 531 |
| 2 × 2 inch | 400 × 400 | 600 × 600 |
| 200 × 230 px | already in pixels | |
When a notice gives centimetres, switch the unit to cm and set the DPI it names (200 if it names none).
Worked example
A notice asks for a 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo between 10 and 100 KB. Set the unit to cm, type 3.5 and 4.5, keep 200 DPI, and set 10 and 100 KB. The tool makes a 276 × 354 pixel JPG of about 35 to 60 KB at high quality.
Questions people ask
- What is the passport size photo size in pixels?
- It depends on the form. 3.5 × 4.5 cm is 276 × 354 pixels at 200 DPI and 413 × 531 at 300 DPI. Our exam pages list each form's own numbers.
- Can I add my name and date below the photo?
- Yes. Tick Add name and date below the photo; the strip takes about a sixth of the height, inside the pixel size you set. Write the date the photo was taken: the tool fills it in when the photo has its date saved.
- My background is not white. Will the tool fix it?
- Yes. Choose White under Background and the tool puts plain white behind you, on your own phone. It works best if you stood in front of a plain wall; check the edges of your hair before you upload. If your notice says the photo must not be edited, or the photo is for a passport or visa, take a new photo against a white wall instead.
- Does the photo need to be recent?
- Most notices ask for a photo taken within the last few months, and some give a date after which it must be taken. Follow your notice.
