How to work out your percentage

  1. Type each subject's marks and its maximum under Out of, as on your mark sheet. Tap Add a subject for more rows.
  2. Untick Count for a subject the form says to leave out, or tap Best five to count only your five subjects with the highest percentages.
  3. Read the total and the percentage.

The formula

Percentage = marks obtained ÷ maximum marks × 100, over the subjects that count. With 82, 76, 91, 88 and 79 out of 100 in five subjects, the total is 416 out of 500, which is 83.2%. When subjects have different maximums (a practical out of 30, say), add the marks and the maximums separately and divide once: averaging the subjects' percentages gives a different answer.

CBSE and the best five subjects

CBSE does not give an overall percentage, division or distinction for Class 10 or Class 12. Its notice of 30 November 2023 points to its examination bye-laws (40.1(iii)), under which no overall division, distinction or aggregate is awarded. It adds that if a student took more than five subjects, the college or employer may decide which are the best five, and that the Board does not calculate, declare or communicate a percentage: a college or employer that needs one may work it out. So read your admission or job notice. Many want a language among the five, or a particular subject, and some count all subjects. Tick exactly the subjects it says.

Worked example

Meera's Class 10 marks are English 82, Hindi 76, Mathematics 91, Science 88, Social Science 79 and Sanskrit 95, each out of 100, as in the calculator above. All six give 511 out of 600, which is 85.17%. Her five best subjects leave out Hindi: 435 out of 500, which is 87%. A college that wants English plus the four best of the rest would also get 87% here, but the answer would differ if English were her lowest mark.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate the percentage of my marks?
Add the marks you got, add the maximum marks, divide the first by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 416 out of 500 is 416 ÷ 500 × 100 = 83.2%.
Does CBSE give a percentage in Class 10 or 12?
No. CBSE does not calculate or declare an overall percentage, division or distinction. Its notice of 30 November 2023 says a college or employer that needs a percentage may work it out, and may decide which five subjects are the best five.
Should I count my sixth (additional) subject?
Only if the form says so. Many forms count the best five subjects, or a language and the best four of the rest. Untick the subjects your form leaves out.
Is this the percentage my board or university gives?
No. It is arithmetic on the marks you type, shown on screen as a guide. The percentage your board, university, college or employer works out is the one that counts.
Is my mark sheet data saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device.
