The formula
The SGPA (semester grade point average) is the average grade point of one semester, with each course weighted by its credits. The CGPA (cumulative grade point average) does the same over all semesters so far: multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's credits, add these up, and divide by the total credits. Written out, CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ ΣCi, where Si is the SGPA of semester i and Ci its credits. A semester with more credits counts for more.
Worked example
The calculator opens with the worked example in UGC's model curriculum for the Choice Based Credit System: six semesters with SGPAs of 6.9, 6.7, 9.15, 7.38, 7.75 and 8.0, and credits of 20, 20, 26, 26, 24 and 24. That is 20 × 6.9 + 20 × 6.7 + 26 × 9.15 + 26 × 7.38 + 24 × 7.75 + 24 × 8.0 = 1,079.78 grade points over 140 credits, and 1,079.78 ÷ 140 = 7.71. The plain average of the six SGPAs is lower, 7.65, because the best semester (9.15) had more credits than most.
Grade points on the 10-point scale
UGC's model curriculum gives these letter grades and grade points: O (Outstanding) 10, A+ (Excellent) 9, A (Very Good) 8, B+ (Good) 7, B (Above Average) 6, C (Average) 5, P (Pass) 4, F (Fail) 0 and Ab (Absent) 0. Universities set the marks for each grade themselves, so check your own university's table.
Without credits
If you leave every credits box empty, the calculator takes the plain average of the SGPAs. That matches your university's CGPA only when every semester has the same credits, so type the credits when you can.
If your grade card shows another CGPA
Universities differ in the details: some count a failed course only once it is cleared, some leave non-credit courses out, and some round each SGPA before averaging. If the CGPA on your grade card differs from this one, the grade card is right, and your university's regulations explain the difference.

Questions people ask
- How is CGPA calculated from SGPA?
- Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, add these up, and divide by the total credits. Without credits, the plain average of the SGPAs is close, but exact only when every semester has the same credits.
- Is CGPA the average of SGPAs?
- Only when every semester has the same credits. Otherwise each SGPA is weighted by its semester's credits, as in the worked examples of UGC's model curriculum for the Choice Based Credit System.
- How do I turn my CGPA into a percentage?
- Choose your university under As a percentage, or open the CGPA to percentage calculator. Each university has its own rule, such as CGPA × 10 at Delhi University for those graduating from 2022-23 and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for VTU's 2015 to 2018 schemes.
- Is anything I type saved?
- No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device.
