When a PDF needs page numbers
Project reports, dissertations, office files, legal papers and long applications are easier to check when every page is numbered, and some offices ask for documents to be numbered in order. Numbers also help when you merge several certificates into one PDF: "page 7 of 12" is easier to point at than "the third certificate".
How to add page numbers
- Tap Choose a PDF.
- Choose Where (bottom centre is the usual place), the Style and the Size.
- If the first page is a cover, tick No number on the first page. Change First number if the numbering should continue from another file.
- Tap Make my file, check the page shown, and download it.

What changes in the file
The numbers are written on top of each page, about 1 cm from the edge, in a plain font. Nothing else changes: typed text stays sharp and searchable, scans are not saved again, and the file grows by only a few KB. On a page that is turned sideways, the number still sits at the bottom of the page as you see it.
Worked example
A 26-page project report with a cover page: tick No number on the first page, keep First number at 1 and choose the style Page 1 of 9. The cover stays clean, the second page reads Page 1 of 25 and the last one Page 25 of 25.
Questions people ask
- Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
- Yes. Type it in First number. This helps when the PDF continues another file, such as a second volume.
- Can I leave the cover page without a number?
- Yes. Tick No number on the first page; the second page then gets the first number.
- Can I put the numbers at the top?
- Yes. Where offers the top and bottom, each at the left, centre or right.
- Does it change my pages?
- Only by adding the numbers. The text and pictures on each page stay exactly as they were.
- Is my PDF uploaded?
- No. The numbers are added by your own browser, and the PDF never leaves your phone or computer.
