iPhone HEIC photos: how to get a JPG for online forms
Updated 11 October 2026
If you use an iPhone, your photos are probably saved in the HEIC format. That is fine for your gallery, but many exam and job portals accept only JPG/JPEG. You may see "invalid file format", or the file may not appear in the picker at all. Here are the ways around it.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, based on the HEIF standard) is the format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11 when the camera is set to "High Efficiency". It stores a photo of similar quality in roughly half the space of a JPEG. The downside is compatibility: older Windows PCs, many websites and many government portals cannot read it.
Option 1: make the camera save JPG from now on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Camera, then Formats.
- Choose Most Compatible.
From now on, new photos are saved as JPEG. Photos already in your library stay as HEIC. Note that some newer camera features, such as certain high-resolution or ProRAW modes, may need High Efficiency, so you can switch back after taking your form photos.
Option 2: let iOS convert while sharing or uploading
iOS often converts HEIC to JPEG automatically when a photo leaves your phone in a way that might not support HEIC:
- When you choose a photo in Safari's file picker on many websites, iOS frequently hands the site a JPEG copy.
- Attaching to Mail or sharing to many apps usually sends a JPEG.
- For transfers to a computer, Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Automatic converts photos to a compatible format.
The exact behaviour depends on the iOS version and the website, so always check the file name or format the form shows after selecting.
Option 3: convert on this site, in any browser
- For one photo for a form, open Compress Image or Resize Photo. For several photos as they are, open the HEIC to JPG converter.
- Choose your HEIC photo or photos. Safari opens HEIC by itself; in Chrome, Edge or Firefox the page first loads a HEIC reader, so the first photo takes a few seconds.
- Set the target size or dimensions from your notice, if any.
- Download. The output is a JPG, ready to upload.
The conversion happens on your phone or computer. Your photo is not sent to our server. This also works on a Windows PC or an Android phone that received HEIC files, for example from a cloud drive.
Option 4: the Files app
If you saved a HEIC file into the Files app (for example from email or a cloud drive), you can open it in our tool from there: in the file picker, choose Browse instead of Photo Library. Long-pressing an image in Files can also show Quick Actions such as Convert Image on recent iOS versions; availability varies by version.
Worked example
Arjun's iPhone photo is IMG_4521.HEIC, 4032 × 3024 px, 1.8 MB. The form needs JPG, 200 × 230 px, under 50 KB.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Open in Resize Photo | HEIC read in the browser |
| Crop to head and shoulders, 200:230 shape | portrait crop from the landscape original |
| Resize to 200 × 230 and set 45 KB target | JPG of about 40 to 45 KB |
| Download | a file ending in .jpg that the portal accepts |
Notice the original was landscape (wider than tall). Cropping before resizing keeps the face from being squashed; see aspect ratio.
How to tell if a photo is HEIC
- In the Photos app on recent iOS versions, swipe up on a photo or tap the info button; the details often show the format.
- On a computer, the file ends in .heic or .HEIC.
- If a form's picker greys out the photo or shows "unsupported", HEIC is a likely cause.
Android phones too
Some Android phones, including certain Samsung models, have an option to save photos as HEIF in camera settings. If it is on, turn it off before taking form photos, or convert with the same steps as above. More on formats in JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC.
Questions people ask
- How do I change my iPhone camera from HEIC to JPG?
- Go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPEG.
- Why does the form not accept my iPhone photo?
- The photo is probably in HEIC format, which many portals do not support. Convert it to JPG or switch the camera to Most Compatible.
- Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
- Slightly, as JPEG is lossy, but at normal quality settings the difference is not visible, especially at the small sizes forms ask for.
- Will old photos change when I switch to Most Compatible?
- No. Only new photos are saved as JPEG; existing HEIC photos stay as they are.
- Can I convert HEIC to JPG without an app?
- Yes. Open this site's HEIC to JPG converter in any browser, choose the photos and download them as JPG. Nothing is uploaded.
