How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Tap Choose photos and pick one or more HEIC photos, up to 50. On a computer you can also drop them on the box.
- Keep Save as on JPG and Quality on High (90%), or pick another.
- To make the photos smaller as well, choose a Pixel size or type a Maximum KB for each photo.
- Tap Convert. Download each JPG, or all of them in one ZIP.
Why iPhone photos are HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC when the camera is set to High Efficiency, which is the default. HEIC stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG, but most exam and job portals, older Windows computers and many websites cannot open it. Converting gives you a JPG that opens everywhere. To make the camera save JPG from now on, see iPhone HEIC photos.
How the conversion works
Safari on iPhone and Mac opens HEIC photos by itself. Other browsers, such as Chrome on Android or Windows, cannot, so the first time you choose a HEIC photo this page fetches a HEIC reader from this site (libheif, under 1 MB to download) and runs it in your browser. Each 12-megapixel photo then takes a few seconds to open, longer on older phones. The photo is never sent anywhere: it is opened, drawn and saved again on your own device.
Size and quality
A JPG needs more bytes than a HEIC for the same picture, so expect each JPG to be about one and a half to two times the size of its HEIC at High (90%). Best (95%) keeps a little more fine detail and makes bigger files; Medium (80%) is hard to tell apart on a phone screen and makes much smaller ones. For a form with a KB limit, type the limit as the maximum, or use Compress image, which also crops the photo and sets the exact pixel size.
What the JPG keeps
The picture, the right way up, at the same width and height up to 4,096 pixels a side (larger photos, such as 48-megapixel ones, are scaled down to that). It does not keep the location, the date taken or the camera details, which is safer for photos you send to strangers. A Live Photo comes out as its still picture.
Worked example
Five iPhone photos, IMG_2041.HEIC to IMG_2045.HEIC, about 10 MB together, converted at High (90%): five JPGs of 4032 × 3024 pixels named IMG_2041.jpg to IMG_2045.jpg, in one ZIP. With Maximum KB for each photo set to 500, each comes out under 500 KB instead: the quality stays at 55% or more, and the pixel size is lowered as far as needed.
Questions people ask
- Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?
- Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit: up to 50 photos at a time, as many times as you like.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. They are converted by your own browser and stay on your phone or computer. Once the page and its HEIC reader have loaded, it works even with the internet off.
- Does it work on Android and Windows?
- Yes. Chrome, Edge and Firefox use the HEIC reader this page loads; Safari on iPhone and Mac opens HEIC by itself.
- Why does the first photo take a few seconds?
- Browsers other than Safari cannot open HEIC, so the page first fetches its HEIC reader (under 1 MB). After that, each photo takes a few seconds, depending on the phone or computer.
- Will the JPG lose quality?
- Very little at High (90%) or Best (95%): the difference is hard to see even zoomed in. The JPG is bigger than the HEIC because JPG compresses less tightly.
- Does the JPG keep the date and location?
- No. The new file holds only the picture, so the location, the date taken and the camera details are left out.
