Where WebP files come from
Websites send images as WebP because the files are smaller than JPG at the same quality. When you save a picture from a web page, or some images from WhatsApp Web, you often get a .webp file. Phones and browsers open it, but most exam portals, many print shops and older software do not.
Why the JPG is bigger
WebP compresses photos more tightly than JPG, so the JPG usually needs more KB than the WebP it came from. That is normal and does not mean anything was added. If you need the file small, choose Medium (80%) or type a Maximum KB for each photo.
Worked example
Eight photos of your own products, saved as 1000 × 1000 WEBP files, converted with a maximum of 100 KB: eight JPGs of 1000 × 1000 pixels, each under 100 KB, in one ZIP. A see-through WebP gets a white background, as JPG has no transparency.

- Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP?
- WebP compresses photos more tightly than JPG, so the same picture needs more bytes as a JPG. Choose Medium (80%) or set a Maximum KB for smaller files.
- Can I convert an animated WebP?
- It comes out as a still JPG of its first frame.
- Is it safe?
- Yes. The images are converted by your own browser and are never uploaded.
