How to count words and characters
- Tap Clear to remove the example, then paste or type your text in the box.
- The counts change as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and how many words are in Hindi and in English.
- If your form or essay has a limit, type it under Limit and choose words or characters. The bar shows how much is left and turns red when you go over.
How words are counted
A word is anything between two spaces or line breaks that has at least one letter or number in it. So well-known is one word, 2026 is one word, and a dash or a purna viram (।) standing on its own is not a word. Word processors and websites follow slightly different rules for numbers, symbols and links, so their count can differ a little; under a strict limit, leave a small margin.
Counting Hindi text
Hindi words are counted the same way, by the spaces between them, and the counter also shows how many words are in Devanagari and how many in English letters, which helps with mixed text. A sentence can end with a full stop or with a purna viram.
Characters are counted the way a computer stores them, which is also how a character limit in a text box on a website counts them. In Hindi, every letter, matra, halant and anusvara is a character of its own. So नमस्ते is 6 characters (न म स ् त े) though it looks like fewer, and क्षमा is 5 (क ् ष म ा). Hindi text uses up a character limit faster than it looks, so check the count before you paste it into a form.
Word and character limits
Applications, scholarship forms and assignments often ask for an answer within a number of words or characters. A character limit counts spaces too unless the form says otherwise, so watch the Characters number for it, not Without spaces. Some forms stop you typing at the limit, or cut off the rest when you paste, so the end of a long answer can be lost without a warning.
Sentences and paragraphs
A sentence ends with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or purna viram that is followed by a space or the end of the text, so the full stop in 8.5 does not end one. Short forms such as Dr. or e.g. are counted as sentence ends, which can make the sentence count a little high. Each line with words in it counts as a paragraph; empty lines are not counted.
Your text stays with you
The counter runs in your browser. Nothing you type or paste is sent anywhere or saved, so it is safe to check an answer before you submit it.
Questions people ask
- How do I count words in Hindi?
- Paste or type your Hindi text in the box. Words are counted by the spaces between them, and the counter also shows the Hindi (Devanagari) words and the English words separately.
- Does the character count include spaces?
- Characters includes spaces and line breaks; Without spaces leaves them out. A character limit on a form counts spaces too unless the form says otherwise.
- Why does my Hindi text have more characters than I can see?

- Why is my count different from another counter?
- Counters differ slightly on numbers, symbols, links and words joined by a dash. Here a word is anything between spaces with at least one letter or number in it.
- Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
- No. The counter runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device.
