How to convert CGPA to percentage
- Choose your board or university under Board or university. Its rule fills in, with a link to the document it comes from and who the rule is for.
- Type your CGPA as it is printed on your grade card or mark sheet.
- Read the percentage and the working under it. The table below it shows the same CGPA under every rule, which is why the right rule matters.
If your university is not in the list, choose My own formula and type the two numbers of its rule: what to subtract (often 0) and what to multiply by.
Why there is no single formula
A CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is an average of grade points, usually on a 10-point scale. A percentage is marks out of 100. They measure different things, so each board or university decides for itself how to turn one into the other, and the rules differ. CBSE multiplied by 9.5 for its Class 10 grades from 2010 to 2017. Delhi University multiplies by 10 for students graduating from 2022-23, and multiplied by 9.5 before that. VTU's 2015 to 2018 schemes, GTU and JNTUH first subtract a number (0.75 or 0.5) and then multiply by 10.
So the same CGPA of 8 is 76% under the CBSE rule, 80% under Delhi University's current rule, 75% under GTU's and 72.5% under VTU's older one. Use only the rule of the board or university that gave your result, or the one your form names.
The CBSE 9.5 rule
From 2010 to 2017, CBSE gave Class 10 results as grades and a CGPA instead of marks. Its Circular No. 24 of 28 May 2010 says "an indicative equivalence" can be worked out: 9.5 × the grade point of a subject for that subject, and 9.5 × the CGPA overall, with the CGPA leaving out the additional sixth subject. CBSE calls this percentage indicative, so a college could still ask for something else. Today CBSE gives marks again and does not work out an overall percentage at all; see the marks percentage calculator.
Worked example
Aman's B.E. grade card from VTU, under the 2018 scheme, shows a CGPA of 8.20. VTU's formula for that scheme is (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so his percentage is (8.20 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%. The same number would give 77.9% under the CBSE Class 10 rule, and 82% under VTU's rule for students admitted from 2022-23.
When a form asks for a percentage
Use the percentage your university gives, or its formula. Many universities print the formula on the grade card; Delhi University prints the formula instead of the percentage. Some forms say which conversion to use, and then the form's rule applies. This calculator shows the result on screen only, as a guide: it does not make a certificate, and a screenshot of it is not proof of anything. If a form needs a conversion or equivalence certificate, ask your university for one.

Para 1.3: the CGPA is given "excluding additional 6th subject", and "An indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks can be computed as follows:" "Subject wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x GP of the subject" and "Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA".
For Class 10 results given as grades and a CGPA, from 2010 to 2017. The CGPA on the result leaves out the additional sixth subject, and CBSE calls the percentage indicative.

Questions people ask
- How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
- Use the rule of the board or university that gave your result. CBSE's Class 10 rule (2010 to 2017) is CGPA × 9.5; Delhi University uses CGPA × 10 for students graduating from 2022-23; VTU's 2015 to 2018 schemes use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. The calculator has each rule with its source.
- Is multiplying CGPA by 9.5 right for every university?
- No. 9.5 was CBSE's rule for Class 10 grades from 2010 to 2017, and Delhi University used it before 2022-23. Many universities multiply by 10, and some subtract a number first. Use 9.5 only when your board or university says so.
- What is 8 CGPA in percentage?
- It depends on the rule: 76% under CBSE's Class 10 rule (× 9.5); 80% under the rules of Delhi University from 2022-23, Anna University, VIT and SRM (× 10); 75% under GTU's and JNTUH's ((CGPA − 0.5) × 10); and 72.5% under VTU's 2015 to 2018 schemes ((CGPA − 0.75) × 10).
- Can I use this result as a certificate?
- No. It shows the result on screen only, as a guide. If a form or employer needs proof, ask your university for its percentage or equivalence certificate.
- My university is not in the list. What should I do?
- Look for the formula on your grade card or in your university's regulations or circulars, then choose My own formula and type its numbers. If you cannot find one, ask your university's examination section.
- Is my CGPA sent anywhere?
- No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device.
