Photo rules for NEET, JEE Main and CUET: the upload and the live photo

NEET UG, JEE Main and CUET UG are all run by the National Testing Agency (NTA), and their forms ask for your photo twice. You upload a passport-size photo, and the form also takes a live photo of you through the camera while you fill it in. We've read the upload sections of all three 2026 information bulletins. The rules are close but not the same, and NEET's has the most of them.
When we checked on 24 October 2026, the 2027 bulletins weren't out yet, so the numbers here are from 2026. Once your 2027 bulletin is out, its numbers are the ones that count.
The live photo
You switch on the camera, or plug in a webcam, on the device you're filling the form on. If it has no webcam, the form shows a QR code. Scan it with a phone or tablet and take the photo there.
All three bulletins ask for the same thing: a light-coloured background, proper lighting, and 80% of your face visible, including your ears, without a mask. A few things help:
- Face a window or a lamp. With the light behind you, your face comes out dark.
- Sit in front of a plain, light wall, with no door, poster or cupboard in the frame.
- Take off your mask and cap, and keep your hair off your ears.
- Hold the phone or laptop at eye level and look straight at it.
NEET goes a step further and matches the live photo with your photo in the Aadhaar records. If the two don't match, or if you verify your identity with something other than Aadhaar, you have to upload a signed certificate with a recent photo, certified by the principal or headmaster of your school or college, or attested by a Class-I Gazetted Officer such as a Tehsildar or SDM. The format is in the bulletin's Annexure-VI. So if your Aadhaar photo is many years old, it's worth getting it updated before you apply. The JEE Main and CUET bulletins give the same advice.
None of the bulletins says whether you can take the live photo again. NEET's says the live photo is final once you've paid the fee and the confirmation page is made, so check it on the screen before you pay.
The photo, signature and documents you upload
| Exam | Photo | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| NEET UG | 10–200 KB | 10–100 KB |
| JEE Main | 10–200 KB | 10–100 KB |
| CUET UG | 10–200 KB | 10–50 KB |
Both files are JPGs. For the photo, all three want a white background, with your face (no mask, both ears showing) taking up 80% of the picture. NEET's bulletin spells it out: 80% of the image should be your face. So crop close, from just above your hair to just below your chin. JEE Main and CUET want it in colour, and NEET takes colour or black and white. None of the bulletins gives a size in pixels or centimetres, only "passport size" and the KB range.
NEET has a few more rules for the photo:
- A recent photo. The 2026 bulletin wanted one taken after 1 January 2026. JEE Main and CUET just say "recent". Either way, don't reuse an old school photo.
- Glasses only if you always wear them. The bulletin allows spectacles only if you use them regularly.
- Nothing computer-made. Polaroid and computer-generated photos aren't accepted, and a photo that looks de-shaped, hand-made or computer-made gets the form rejected and is treated as unfair means. JEE Main also lists a morphed photo under unfair means. So don't stretch a photo to fit, and don't change your face or the background in an app. Stand against a real white wall instead.
- Only your own photo. If someone else's photo is uploaded, NEET cancels the candidature, treats it as unfair means and starts criminal action too.
The signature is a JPG of 10 to 100 KB for NEET and JEE Main, but only 10 to 50 KB for CUET. A signature file you made for NEET can be too big for CUET, so check it again for each form.
Certificates go up as PDFs of 50 to 300 KB in all three. NEET asks for the most: your Class 10 certificate and marksheet, proof of your present and permanent address, and category or disability certificates where they apply. JEE Main asks for the Class 10 certificate or marksheet, and JEE Main and CUET both ask for a disability or UDID certificate where it applies. A phone scan can easily pass 300 KB, and the PDF compressor brings it down.
If you don't verify your identity through Aadhaar or DigiLocker, you also upload an identity proof, as a JPG of 10 to 200 KB. NEET's bulletin gives two different sizes for two uploads: the identity proof is 10 to 200 KB in one line and 50 to 300 KB in another, and the finger and thumb impressions of both hands are 10 to 200 KB on one page and 50 to 300 KB on the next. A file between 50 and 200 KB fits both numbers. JEE Main's bulletin doesn't ask for finger or thumb impressions. NEET also suggests verifying your identity with your own Aadhaar, so you don't need an extra document.
Prints for the exam centre
JEE Main and CUET ask you to bring one passport-size photo to the centre, the same as the one on your form, to paste on the attendance sheet. NEET asks you to keep 6 to 8 passport-size and 4 to 6 postcard-size (4 × 6 inch) colour photos with a white background, for the exam and later for counselling and admission, and the passport-size one must be the same as the one you uploaded. The simple way is to make the prints from the same original photo. Our passport photo maker puts 8 copies on one 6 × 4 inch sheet that any photo shop can print.
Make your files
- Take the photo in daylight against a plain white wall, looking straight at the camera with both ears showing.
- Open the page for your exam: NEET UG, JEE Main or CUET UG. The button under the photo opens our photo tool with the exam's KB range filled in.
- Choose your photo, crop it close around your face, and download the JPG.
- Do the same for your signature. If you made your files somewhere else, the Check a file I already have button tests them against the same numbers.
The tools work inside your browser, so your photo, signature and certificates stay on your phone or computer. Nothing is uploaded to us.
Before you submit
Look at the preview of every image before you submit and pay. NEET and JEE Main both say the facility to correct an upload won't be given later, and JEE Main and CUET say a request to change uploaded images won't be considered at any stage. NTA can also verify your details and photos, and at the centre the invigilators match your face with your photo. NEET adds checks such as biometric and face authentication.
