How to convert JPG to PNG
- Tap Choose photos and pick your JPG files, up to 50.
- Keep Save as on PNG.
- To keep the files smaller, pick a Pixel size, such as 50%.
- Tap Convert and download the PNGs, or all of them in one ZIP.
When PNG is the right choice
PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, and saving it again never adds blur. That makes it the better format for a picture you will edit several times, for screenshots with text, and for apps or forms that ask for PNG. It cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost, and a photo saved as PNG is usually several times bigger than the JPG. For uploads with a KB limit, JPG is almost always the better choice; see lossy and lossless.
See-through backgrounds
A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG made from it has none either: every pixel stays as it was. To make the background of your own photo see-through, use Remove background.
Worked example
A 1200 × 1600 JPG of 280 KB becomes a PNG of the same 1200 × 1600 pixels, usually a few megabytes. With Pixel size at 50%, it comes out at 600 × 800 pixels, about a quarter of that.
Questions people ask
- Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
- No. The PNG keeps the JPG's pixels exactly, including any blur the JPG already had; it only stops further loss.
- Why is the PNG so much bigger?
- PNG stores every pixel without throwing detail away, while JPG saves space by dropping detail you barely see. For photos that makes PNG several times bigger.
- Can I make the background transparent?
- Not by converting. Use Remove background to cut out a person as a see-through PNG.
