How to remove the background from a photo

  1. Choose a photo of a person: a selfie, a portrait or a full-length photo.
  2. Keep Background on None (see-through PNG), or pick a colour to put behind the person.
  3. To keep only part of the photo, type a width and a height: a box appears for choosing the part. With no size, the whole photo is kept.
  4. Tap Make my file and download the PNG.

What a see-through PNG is for

A PNG can store transparency, so the area around the person is empty. Placed on a poster, an invitation card, a slide or a sticker app, the cut-out shows whatever is behind it. A JPG cannot store transparency, so a JPG made from the cut-out gets a white background. Online forms that ask for a JPG photo need a colour, not transparency: for those, use change photo background, which also sets the pixel size and KB.

What it can and cannot cut out

The tool uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter, a 249 KB model by Google that runs in your browser. It is made for people: one or two people close to the camera, from face and shoulders to the whole body. It does not find objects, animals or text, and it can miss small people far away. The edge follows the colours in the photo, so hair comes out cleanest against a plain background.

Size of the cut-out

The cut-out is made at up to 1,280 pixels on its long side: sharp on a phone screen, in a social media post or as a profile picture. A PNG cut-out of a phone photo is usually 0.5 to 1.5 MB. If a website limits the file size, type it as Maximum KB and the tool lowers the pixel size until the PNG fits.

Is this background remover free?
Yes: no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of photos.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The model runs inside your browser, so the photo stays on your phone or computer.
Why does my PNG show a white or black background?
Some apps and galleries show see-through parts as white or black. Place the file on a coloured slide or in an editing app to see the transparency. A JPG has none, so keep the format on PNG.
Can it remove the background from a product or a logo?
No. It finds people only. Photograph a product on a plain sheet of paper instead.
How big is the cut-out?
Up to 1,280 pixels on the long side. Type a width or a height for a smaller one, or a Maximum KB to keep the file small.
