How to convert a percentage to CGPA
- Choose the board or university whose rule you need under Board or university.
- Type the percentage.
- Read the CGPA. When it is not a round number, it is shown to two decimals, and the working shows the longer figure.
When you need this
Some forms give a limit in one form when your result is in the other: a college may ask for "60% or equivalent CGPA", or for a CGPA when your mark sheet shows marks. Working a rule backwards gives the CGPA that matches a percentage under that rule. Under CBSE's Class 10 rule (CGPA × 9.5), 60% is a CGPA of about 6.32; under JNTUH's ((CGPA − 0.5) × 10) it is 6.5; under VTU's 2015 to 2018 schemes ((CGPA − 0.75) × 10) it is 6.75. If the form gives its own conversion, follow the form.
The arithmetic
Every rule here has the form percentage = (CGPA − a) × b, so CGPA = percentage ÷ b + a. Under CBSE's rule a = 0 and b = 9.5: 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.947…, which is 8.95 to two decimals. A rule that subtracts first cannot reach 100%: VTU's older rule stops at (10 − 0.75) × 10 = 92.5%, and GTU's and JNTUH's at 95%, so a higher percentage has no CGPA under them. CBSE's 9.5 rule stops at 95% too.
Worked example
A job notice asks for "a first class (60%) or equivalent CGPA". Priya graduated from Delhi University in 2024, where the rule is CGPA × 10, so the matching CGPA is 60 ÷ 10 = 6. Her friend from a JNTUH college, where the rule is (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, needs 60 ÷ 10 + 0.5 = 6.5.

Para 1.3: the CGPA is given "excluding additional 6th subject", and "An indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks can be computed as follows:" "Subject wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x GP of the subject" and "Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA".
For Class 10 results given as grades and a CGPA, from 2010 to 2017. The CGPA on the result leaves out the additional sixth subject, and CBSE calls the percentage indicative.

Questions people ask
- How do I convert a percentage to CGPA for CBSE?
- Under CBSE's Class 10 rule from 2010 to 2017, divide the percentage by 9.5: 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 (to two decimals). CBSE now gives marks, not a CGPA, so the rule is for those years' grades.
- Why does the calculator say no CGPA gives my percentage?
- Under some rules even a CGPA of 10 gives less than 100%: 95% under CBSE's × 9.5, 92.5% under VTU's 2015 to 2018 schemes, and 95% under GTU's and JNTUH's. A higher percentage has no CGPA under those rules.
- Is percentage to CGPA the same everywhere?
- No. Each university has its own rule, so the same percentage gives a different CGPA under each. Use the rule of the university that gave the result, or the one the form names.
- Is anything I type saved?
- No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device.
